MARINUS VINEYARD CONCERTS presents

The Cello Chronicles

To kick off our 2024-2025 season, Marinus Vineyard Concerts (formerly Marinus in the Vineyard) welcomes the TexasCello Quartet. Four renowned cellists, who on other nights might be playing at New York’s Lincoln Center or the Kennedy Center, are joining forces to play a delightful collection of repertoire that journeys through the Renaissance and Classical, reaching not only to the romantic literature of Schubert’s Erlkönig and Elgar’s nostalgic Nimrod Variations, but beyond the classical tradition with Radiohead’s Karma Police and Mancini’s Moon River.

NUEVO TANGO

On September 19, 2023 MARINUS in the VINEYARD returns to Crozet to present something totally new—NUEVO TANGO. Although we’re calling this “new tango”, we’re pairing a dance suite by J.S. Bach with works by Argentine tango-master Astor Piazzolla and new compositions by another Argentine bandoneon player and composer, GRAMMY-nominated Juan Pablo Jofre.

JP JOFRE is praised by CNN as “one of the most important Argentinean bandoneonists and composers” and highlighted repeatedly by the New York Times as one of today’s leading artists. Cellist JOSEPH KUIPERS, “…a powerfully gifted performer, and a virtuoso cellist” (Sonus Journal) will join him from Dallas where they first teamed up at the Music@Mill Festival last spring.

CHAMBER MUSIC RALEIGH

North Carolina Museum of Art

Raleigh, NC

April 30, 2023 | 2PM

Renié: Contemplation
Damase: Sonate pour flûte et harpe
Debussy: Beau Soir
Fauré: Après un Rêve, Opus 7/1
de Falla: Siete Canciones Populares Espanolas
Debussy: Sonata for Flute, Harp and Viola

Close networks of likeminded people make fertile ground for creativity as we see in this program featuring French inspired music for harp. All the composers performed today had musical relationships: Debussy inspiring and competing with Ravel; Fauré teaching Ravel at the Conservatoire; Renié influencing Ravel and Debussy; Ravel cavorting with the likes of de Falla and Stravinsky. It is amazing to think that such brilliant circles existed, and that they may still exist to perpetuate the evolution of music and culture.

This concert will examine nationalism in music as exemplified in Turina’s “Piano Quartet in A Minor, Op. 67”, Bloch’s “Suite Hebraique”, and Shostakovitch’s “Piano Quintet in G Minor, Op. 57”. The concert is dedicated to the memory of H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest ‘53 (1930-2018) whose philanthropy not only funded the Lenfest Center for the Arts and significant programs at W&L, but nurtured the Marinus Ensemble during its early days.

Marinus Ensemble Tribute to Mary Maples Dunn

Opening with The Emperor Quartet by Joseph Haydn, listen for the patriotic song “Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser” which Haydn used masterfully as the basis of the 2nd movement with its three variations. Beethoven’s immortal Cavatina, the 5th movement of the Opus 130 String quartet is painfully introspective, creating sound for those thoughts that have no words, creating a space for us to grasp at the transcendent. What we cannot say with words, Beethoven perhaps tried to say with this work. The last piece is Schubert’s Quartettsatz in C minor. It is the first movement of what was likely to be a full string quartet, but was left unfinished.

  • Haydn: String Quartet Op. 76, No. 3 “Emperor”
  • Beethoven: String Quartet Op. 130, Cavatina
  • Schubert: Quartetsatz in C minor, no. 12
